ANTI RADIATION HERBS

Herbal Antioxidant Protection from Radiation

Introduction to antioxidants
An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals which start chain reactions that damage cells.  Antioxidants stop these chain reactions by removing free radicals and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves. Although oxidation reactions are crucial for life, they can also be damaging. Specific plants, herbs and spices contain a variety of important antioxidants of which many are famous in Asian cooking where they play an important role in dietary health.
Insufficient levels of antioxidants or excessive oxidative stress may damage or kill human cells. Oxidative stress is an important factor in many human diseases. We now have a greater understanding of why certain plants are beneficial in supporting human health due to the potent antioxidant compounds they contain that help replenish our bodies own natural antioxidant defences.
Because they have one or more unpaired electrons, free radicals are highly unstable. They scavenge your body to grab or donate electrons, thereby damaging cells, proteins, and DNA (genetic material). It is impossible for us to avoid damage by free radicals as these arise from sources both inside and outside our bodies. Oxidants that develop from processes within our bodies form as a result of normal aerobic respiration, metabolism, and inflammation. Exogenous free radicals form from environmental factors such as excessive sunlight, strenuous exercise, X-rays, smoking and alcohol. Ever increasing environmental pollution generates additional free radical damage and toxicity overwhelming our already overburdened detoxification systems.
Antioxidant compound target different cellular reactions and cells of different organs and these are now believed to play a role in preventing the development of such chronic diseases as cancer, heart disease, stroke, alzheimer's, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, liver disease and cataracts.
Nuclear radiation and free radical damage
The recent concerns about radioactive isotopes being released into the environment as a result of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant reactor leakage has the potential to emit some of the most dangerous forms of free radical damage from ionizing radiation. Radioactive elements undergo decay and emit high-energy particles energetic enough to ionize atoms by knocking off their electrons. This ionizing radiation can damage DNA molecules directly, by breaking the bonds between atoms, or it can ionize water molecules and form free radicals (our cells are mostly water and ionizing radiation breaks H20 down into harmful free radicals H+ and OH-), which are highly reactive and also disrupt the bonds of surrounding molecules, including DNA. This DNA damage is enough to kill cells or cause them to mutate in ways that may eventually lead to cancer. The DNA damaging effects of radiation is measured in units called sieverts, which take into account the type and amount of radiation, and which parts of the body are exposed, allowing us to compare different kinds of exposures in one scale. In a typical year, a person might receive a total dose of two or three millisieverts from things like ambient radioactivity, plane flights and medical procedures. 100 millisieverts a year is the limit above which cancer risk starts to increase, according to the World Nuclear Association. The greatest danger is for people living in an affected area and winds can carry radioactive isotopes many hundreds of kilometers (as evidenced from the Chernobyl disaster in Europe), which can accumulate in the body, water table and food chain further damaging tissue over time and causing disease and cancer.
Effects of ionizing radiation
Free radical organ damage depends on which free radical is involved, how high concentration, the target of damage and predisposing factors. Ionizing radiation produces the most rapid free radical damage to various organs, and may produce immediate or delayed damage as follows;
  • Brain: Nerve cells and brain blood vessels can die, leading to seizures.
  • Eyes: Radiation exposure increases the risk of cataracts.
  • Thyroid: The thyroid is very sensitive to the effects of Radioactive iodine (I-131) (in fact, I-131′s affinity for the thyroid is used therapeutically to specifically attract radiation to the thyroid in order to treat thyroid cancer and overactive thyroid). When a healthy thyroid is exposed to I-131, it can lead to decreased thyroid function and, over time, thyroid cancer.
  • Lungs: When you breathe in invisible nuclear fallout particles, it can lead to lung cancer.
  • Heart: High doses of radiation can damage the cells in the blood vessels that feed the heart, reducing cardiac function.
  • Digestive tract: Sensitive cells in the intestinal lining can be damaged, leading to loss of appetite, nausea, bloody vomiting, and bloody diarrhea.
  • Reproductive organs: Rapidly dividing cells (eggs and sperm) in the ovaries and testes can die, leading to sterility.
  • Skin: Rapidly dividing skin cells can be damaged, leading to skin lesions and burn.
  • Lymphatic organs: Rapidly dividing lymphatic cells die and damaged bone marrow may have trouble replenishing these immune-boosting cells, increasing the risk of infection.
  • Other effects and symptoms of excessive free radical damage from radiation exposure includes: tumor growth / cancer, hemorrhages under the skin, bleeding from the nose, gums or mouth, anemia (low red blood cell count), hair loss, weakness and fatigue, fainting, dehydration and inflammation of tissues (swelling, redness or tenderness).
  • Large radiation doses destroys millions of cells and tissues of the body and as such can lead to impairment of any organ function and / or death from organ failure.
Antioxidant protection from free radical damage
The therapeutic benefit of many medicinal plants is a direct result of their antioxidant properties on specific organs and bodily tissues. As such, herbals provide important protection from free radical damage and ionizing radiation. To assist detoxification from high doses of free radicals or radioactive isotopes then an understanding of plant antioxidants and their individual effects is very helpful in selecting the formulations that provide optimal antioxidant components to restore health.
The first step is always to remove oneself from the source of excessive free radicals or area of ionizing radiation exposure and to avoid consuming contaminated foodstuff or drinking contaminated water. Eat a diet high in uncontaminated fresh fruits and vegetables. Studies in Japan have shown a therapeutic effect from consuming a diet high in brown rice, miso soup, vegetables, onions and garlic and abundant seaweed, while also consuming plenty of antioxidant rich green tea. Any diet high in protective nutrients, enzymes and antioxidants will provide higher cellular protection.
Many antioxidant herbs have been studied for their effects as radioprotective agents (able to protect humans from ionizing radiation). In nature, plants have evolved an array of phytochemicals to protect them from the ionizing radiation from the sun and to survive in harsh environments. Tropical herbs and spices in particular have evolved as a response to the intense ultraviolet radiation around the equatorial regions. These herbs have been at the forefront of research into radioprotection as a result of their unique antioxidant effects. They hold immense promise to save human lives in the wake of the rise in global environmental pollution and the potential exposure to nuclear radiation, such as from the recent reactor accident in Fukushima, Japan.

The Jamu history & what is Jamu?

The word of jamu or traditional Indonesian medicine was started and developed from Central Java back in the eighth century.
In Central Java, on the walls of the Borobudur temple there is an ancient monument the use of kalpataruh tree (tree that lives forever) to prepare the medicine.
Jamu influence of Chinese, Indian, Arabian medicine

The jamu legacy

In tradition jamu has been handed down from mother to daughter for many generation that why jamu is still enduring.

Jamu is mean traditional healing or medicine in deferent kind of form such as combination of plants, spiritual or bodywork. Indonesian Society has been use jamu for health and beauty for many centuries. Yes, the word of jamu is come from central java, but doest not mean Indonesian traditional medicine is the only healing that use in java. Mostly in every province in Indonesia have their owns system of traditional medicine. In Sumatra example use of jamu is base on combination of the aboriginals and the ancient Melayu where is using more akar kayu or rainforest herbs and mystic using the bomoh or dukun and tabib to give a complex medicine and treatment. When the Javanese transmigration was started (system of resettling in habitants of overpopulated islands to less populated regions), that how the jamu word and jamu system was influence with the local tradition. With the same event, that how the word of jamu become the common word use for traditional healing in all over Indonesia.
As well in Malaysia jamu becoming popular among Malay society and also became part of Malaysian culture. More less the same history like other part of Indonesia, was started from the old day of Malayan where Indonesian immigrant was playing important part of influence the Malay ‘s culture. Because of the confliction between tradition and religion, so a view system of traditional healing was lost in time.

People out of Indonesia think Jamu is an only daily Javanese yellow herbal drink.  But Jamu is including every traditional treatment or medicine as internal or external and physical or spiritual.

One common herb that use as a base in mostly every Jamu drink and cosmetic is Kunyit or turmeric. Next you will find how important is turmeric in herbal medicine.

I sincerely, wish all the women out there stay in-love, gorgeous and healthy....

Jamu & Marital Enjoyment

In my book, I believe the word of marital enjoyment it is not only for men! Like we always heard in society, how about us women? Don forget actually women are able to enjoy marital life more then men does. Why? Naturally women are full of warm energy, feeling, passion, feel… just let the feeling of your self and to love your self to the fullest, and what more if you have  the understanding of the intimate relationship and be able to let go the emotion. Express your wonderful feeling about yourself, and he will reflect that feeling and gratitude back to you and make you supremely happy and healthy.
There are in some cultures where women it is taboo to talk or to even understand what is intimate relationship. Please don’t let that tradition make you miss of what you don’t want to miss, what a waste! And I believe that tradition it was men’s creation for putting women to stay that way. But guest what, now they realize, it was a mistake for them to do that, where eventually have a negative effect on their satisfaction as well. Then they start hunting again and putting blame on his partner said she isn’t good performing, and bla..bla..bla. So to enjoy intimate relationship is consider once of propitious step from many others to keep a happy relationship. Or keep the men from hunting. Oh, don’t forget to lock them as well and make sure hide the key!

Here is once of the Jamu recipes that I really love it (my fav) hihihi…and I even call it “JamuGoda” or in English mean…oh, its tough though… (try to google it)

My Journey In Jamu

How I first started in Jamu
I was born and grow up in small village, where is surrounded by herbs, and people who great believer in herbs. What more my parent they only believe in herbal medicine. At the same time that time my family cannot afford to buy modern medicine or to go to hospital where also is far from our village. In my family I have 4 sisters, we so close and often we gossip while eating chili and fruit (one the most regular thing to do) so issues of women’s health and beauty were normal for us. Some more my mum she very close to us and the most open mother compare to other village women’s.

In Indonesia every morning “Jamu Gendong” (women selling freshly made herbal medicine) routine come to the village, houses and offices. So we would all order Jamu specific for your age. My mum and older sister that were married will order the Jamu a bit different to us. They would request a combination of fresh herbs and seed for “awet muda” (Youthful energizing herbs) or female astringent herbs for white discharge or tightening herbs. As the youngest child my formula was milder with Turmeric, Ginger or Lempoyang and a little bit of honey for digestive problems. But after the onset of menstruation then the herb combination would be more complex with herbs to assist menstruation and reduce discomfort.

My father would order a special Jamu for him as known as “Jamu kuat lelaki” Strong Men formula, he also like to chit chat or flirt for quite long time with the lady (they traditionally dressed in tight Kebaya). Finally my mum has to remain him to stop because not nice with the Jamu lady she still has to sale her Jamu. Well my father is a kind who loves to talk and joke to any body, special young and pretty women.

As I grew older then my mother started making the formulas herself, especially after my older sisters started giving birth. For 40 days my mother would make the fresh Jamu and all of us would help her prepare, and in the process we would all drink the same herbs.
Another point is that in my family we did not use cosmetics such as moisturizers, sun block, cleansers, toners etc, so what we use is 100% natural herbs, leaves and rice flour to make all that we needed. My sisters and I would enjoy collecting the herbs around the village for formulas for toners, powders, cleansers and hair. When I was 21 only did I use my first moisturizer.

Interest in women’s issues
I am very close to my mother and sisters and observing all my sisters getting married before me and seeing we all lived next door to one another in the village, it was natural that I was surrounded by them and other village women discussing issues of women health, beauty, sexuality and so on. When women come together they discuss about other women as well and in that process I quickly learnt from a very young age what it means to be a women, what are the areas of weakness being a women and what are the ways in which women need help. The areas of weakness included how to maintain one self and keep the interest of one’s husband. Then you had so many stories of women who could not find a husband for various reasons. Basically all these negative gossip taught me that one of the secrets to being a woman is to take care of ones health and beauty. All in all, women in my village placed beauty as an important investment.

After I finished High School I worked as a radio DJ in the city for 4 years as the announcer for a Housewife’s program between 9am to 11am in the morning and for teenagers from 2pm to 4pm afternoon. It was a call in program and even though I was only 17 years old I was mainly getting calls from lonely housewives telling openly about their problems. They had no idea I was only 17 and had never even had a boyfriend yet! But with all my experience growing up with much older sisters I could well of seemed like 37 years old to them. Here I also found that women in the city have somewhat different issues than village women. They were more open in discussing their personal problems, whereas in the village they would be less inclined to talk about themselves in that way. In this environment I forgot about my own age and was very confidant to talk openly with these older women on their problems.

At this time I also studied about Indonesian Jamu. During this time I met my husband, Benjamin Drewe, an Australian Medical Herbalist while he was on a field research trip to my village in Aceh. I also interviewed him on my radio regarding his herbal research.

Since that my interest in jamu especially for women need, be come deeper and deeper. I start to study more about jamu with some midwife around my village. Also at the same time I learn about Sumatran traditional healing using spiritual method.

After marriage, I move to Malaysia where then I create a health café Jamu and start develop a company making jamu health drink. From there I move to a ladies spa with the café environment and it is still base on jamu but a bit more complete. More like my little women’s health and beauty club. It is a place where the women come for their beauty and health treatments, and then sit with their friends at the café. They allowed to staying as long as they want, mostly include my self which is we talked about our own health or perhaps gossiping about other women. I guest that one of the best therapy too for women. I call it natural mental development.
Once in two week I do coffee morning or afternoon tea talk, then my husband Ben start involve. He will give us a free talk and teach my customers of understanding in herbal medicine. It was great experience and fun!

From there, I get to know deeper about what women need and don’t. Now I start manufacturing jamu spa treatment and medicine.
